Our Awards

The award is a joint effort between the Governor, Lt. Governor, IA Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship, and IA Department of Natural Resources to recognize the efforts of Iowa’s farmers as environmental leaders committed to healthy soils and improved water quality.  It seeks to recognize the exemplary voluntary actions of farmers that improve or protect the environment and natural resources of our state while also encouraging other farmers to follow in their footsteps by building success upon success.

Environmental Leader Award
FFA Star Over IA In Beef Production

Kaitlyn Boyer of the Osceola Big Chief FFA Chapter in Osceola is the Star Over Iowa in Ag Production winner. Her FFA SAE or Supervised Agriculture Experience focuses on raising high quality registered Limousin cattle from pasture to plate.  At the age of 11, she purchased her first Limousin heifer and has now grown her herd to 32 head.  She strives to meet the demands of a niche market for natural beef.  Boyer markets her beef cattle through her family’s beef stick business.  She sells the beef sticks directly to the public at the Harvest Barn and the Des Moines Farmer’s Market.  Her breeding stock are sold at the Iowa Beef Expo, as well as private treaty sales.  She analyzes EPDs and utilizes embryo transfer along with other advanced reproductive practices.

This award recognizes a Limousin Breeder from the State of Iowa that focuses on record keeping, industry participation, industry leadership, merchandising programs, herd selection criteria and herd improvement over time. Boyer Family Farms was awarded this award in 2015.
